Article 695 turns normal thinking upside down. For any ordinary motor you protect the motor from overload; for a fire pump you protect the mission. The supply conductors and overcurrent are sized and set so the pump keeps running under overload conditions, accepting that the motor may burn up rather than shutting down while the building is on fire. It also demands a reliable source, protected wiring routing, and often an alternate supply.

This one takes discipline to build correctly because every instinct I have says protect the equipment, and here the code says protect the water. I run the fire-pump feeder to survive, keep it separated and protected from the fire itself, and set the overcurrent to let the pump run to destruction if that is what it takes to keep the sprinklers wet.

When it applies

Fire pumps are wired to keep running, even at the cost of the motor. Article 695 deliberately trades normal overload protection for reliability, because a pump that trips offline during a fire is far more dangerous than a motor that burns up while still moving water. The supply is arranged so the pump keeps pushing as long as it possibly can.

Common mistakes

In the field

On a fire-pump feeder I size for locked-rotor and route it for maximum survivability, keeping it independent and protected. The mindset flips here: we protect the building's water supply, not the motor.
