Emergency circuits get their own raceways, boxes, and cabinets, physically separated from normal wiring so a single event cannot kill both. These systems have to come alive within seconds of losing power.
This is life-safety wiring in the purest sense — the exit signs and stair lights that a crowd follows in the dark. I keep it separate and I test it, because the day it is needed there is no second chance.
When it applies
Emergency systems power the loads that keep people alive during an outage, egress lighting, exit signs, alarms. Section 700.10 requires the wiring for those systems to be kept independent of all other wiring. The goal is isolation, so a short or fire in the normal building wiring cannot drag the emergency circuits down with it.
Common mistakes
- Sharing raceways or boxes between normal and emergency conductors where separation is required.
- Assuming a backup source alone is enough, without keeping the distribution physically independent.
- Overlooking the protection required where emergency circuits pass through areas at risk.
In the field
When I lay out egress lighting, I keep that wiring in its own pathway from the source out. If the normal system faults, the exits stay lit, and that separation is exactly why.
