In patient-care spaces the equipment ground is doubled: the conductors run in a metal raceway or cable and also include a separate insulated grounding conductor. If one path opens, the other still holds.
Hospital work is unforgiving on grounding because the patient's own resistance protections are compromised. I treat every ground connection in these rooms as life-safety, because it is.
When it applies
In patient-care spaces the grounding is doubled up on purpose. You provide a metal raceway or cable path and a separate insulated equipment grounding conductor, so if one path opens, the other still keeps equipment bonded near a patient who may be connected to monitors and lines.
Common mistakes
- Treating a hospital circuit like an ordinary one and running a single grounding path.
- Using a wiring method that does not qualify as the redundant metal path.
- Loose or missing insulated grounding terminations at the hospital-grade receptacle.
In the field
On a clinic buildout I pull the green insulated ground and run it in a listed metal raceway, then verify both paths at every device. Around patients you never want a single loose lug to be the difference.
