Article 518 kicks in at a threshold of occupant load, and its main effect is to restrict wiring to the more robust, fire-resistant methods in the areas where crowds gather. The concern is not just the shock risk to one person but the panic and smoke that a concealed fire can unleash on a packed room with limited exits.
I think of assembly work as designing for the worst night, a full house with the lights suddenly out. So I favor the sturdier raceway methods the article calls for, keep egress lighting circuits clean, and coordinate with the fire-alarm and emergency-lighting trades so the whole life-safety picture actually holds together.
When it applies
Article 518 covers places built to hold crowds, like auditoriums, restaurants, houses of worship, and conference halls. Because a fire in a packed room threatens many people at once, the wiring methods are tightened, favoring metal raceways and cables that resist damage and limit fire spread in these occupancies.
Common mistakes
- Using a wiring method that is fine in a house but not permitted in an assembly space.
- Miscounting the occupant load and misapplying whether the space is an assembly occupancy at all.
- Overlooking the interaction with temporary wiring for stages and events.
In the field
When I wire a banquet hall I lean on metal raceway and listed methods that hold up under a crowd. The extra durability is not about the walls, it is about giving everyone time to get out.
