Teatros y escenarios
Article 520 recognizes that a stage is a temporary electrical installation that changes with every production. It governs the switchboards and dimmer banks, the stage pockets and connector strips, the portable cable that gets rolled out and struck between shows, and the border and footlights close to combustible scenery.
The theme is controlled flexibility: the system must let crews reconfigure quickly without creating shock or fire traps. When I do stage work I respect that portable feeders and connectors carry real current and get handled by non-electricians, so I make the connections foolproof and keep the hot gear clear of the drapes and flats.
When it applies
Article 520 covers theaters, stages, and television studios, places where heavy, constantly changing stage lighting and dimmer systems sit close to people, curtains, and scenery. It addresses the dimmers, the portable stage equipment, the connectors, and the wiring that has to handle frequent reconfiguration without creating a fire or shock hazard among all that combustible material.
Common mistakes
- Overloading portable feeders and multicable runs during a big show setup.
- Using stage connectors or cable not rated for the constant flexing and reuse.
- Routing hot dimmer circuits against drapery and scenery without regard for heat.
In the field
When I wire a stage I plan for the loads to change every production. I size and protect the feeders for the worst case and keep the runs clear of fabric, because a theater full of people leaves no room for a lighting fault to become a fire.
