Carnavales, circos, ferias y eventos similares
Article 525 addresses the reality that a fair is a full electrical installation thrown up in a day and torn down the next, in a field, in the weather, with kids leaning on metal rides. So GFCI protection is front and center for accessible receptacles, portable structures get bonded and grounded, and there are firm clearance rules to keep rides and their setup crews away from overhead power lines.
The service and feeder side of a midway is bigger than people think, a generator or a utility tap feeding a sprawling temporary distribution. I plan those feeders and disconnects carefully, tie the grounding together properly, and treat the overhead-line clearances as non-negotiable, because a crane or a ride swinging into a line is how these events make the news.
When it applies
This is for the traveling show — carnivals, circuses, fairs and the temporary rides and concessions that roll in for a weekend and tear out Monday. Everything is portable, dragged over dirt, and surrounded by the public, so the code leans hard on GFCI protection, overhead line clearances and bonding every metal structure people can touch.
Common mistakes
- Setting a ride or a big tent under or too near overhead power lines — keep the clearances.
- Skipping GFCI protection on the cord-connected equipment the public stands next to.
- Running cords across the midway where they get crushed, wet and stepped on without protection.
In the field
On a fair setup I bond every metal ride and frame back to the supply and confirm GFCI on the public-facing circuits before the gates open. These installs go up fast and get abused by weather and crowds, so the protection has to be right the first pass because nobody is inspecting it again on day two.
