Article 514 draws classified zones as spheres and bands around each dispenser, tighter at the nozzle and looser as you move away. Conduit runs under the island have to be sealed so vapor cannot travel through the raceway into a control room or a store. And there must be a clearly marked emergency disconnect that cuts all power to the dispensers from a safe distance.

The seals under the forecourt are the part inspectors catch people on. If a raceway leaves a classified zone, it gets sealed at the boundary, period. I also make sure the emergency stop actually kills everything it is supposed to, because the day it matters, seconds count.

When it applies

This applies around motor fuel dispensers — gas stations, fleet fueling islands, marina fuel docks. The space around and beneath a dispenser is classified by distance because gasoline vapor is heavier than air and pools low. Common mistakes

• Placing the emergency disconnect where an attendant cannot reach it quickly from a safe distance during a spill.
• Missing a required seal fitting so vapor can travel through the raceway out of the classified zone.
• Underestimating how far the classified boundary extends below grade around the dispenser.

In the field

At a fuel island I map every seal fitting on the classified boundary before anything is energized, and I verify the emergency shutoff drops all the dispensers at once from a reachable spot. Vapor travels through unsealed conduit like water through a pipe, and that is exactly the path you cannot leave open.
