Lugares peligrosos (clasificados) — general

Article 500 is the map for everything that follows in the 501 to 506 range. It teaches the language: Class I is gas and vapor, Class II is combustible dust, Class III is fibers and flyings. Division 1 means the hazard is there in normal operation; Division 2 means it shows up only when something fails. Groups A through G tell you which specific chemistry the equipment is rated to contain.

Get the classification wrong and every dollar you spend on fancy explosionproof gear is wasted, because it was rated for the wrong material. I never guess a classification. I read the area classification drawing, and if one does not exist I get the engineer to sign one.

When it applies

Article 500 builds the whole framework for classified locations. You identify the Class, meaning whether the hazard is flammable gas, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers; the Division, meaning how likely that hazard is present in normal operation; and the Group, meaning how that specific material ignites and burns. Those three answers drive every equipment choice that follows.

Common mistakes

In the field

Before I spec a single fitting I nail down Class, Division, and Group with the area classification drawing. Get those wrong and every enclosure and seal downstream is wrong with it.
