Fire alarm circuits get dedicated support, careful separation from power wiring, and in some cases circuit-integrity or survivability ratings so they keep functioning as conditions deteriorate.
These circuits are usually power-limited like Class 2, but the difference is the mission. A doorbell failing is an annoyance; a fire alarm failing is a tragedy, and the install has to reflect that weight.
When it applies
Section 760.24 is about keeping fire alarm circuits mechanically sound. The wiring has to be installed and supported so its integrity holds up, because a fire alarm's whole job is to keep working during the event long enough to get everyone out. Sloppy support or damaged cable defeats that.
Common mistakes
- Leaving cable draped over pipes or ceiling grid instead of independently supported.
- Cinching ties so tight the conductors are pinched, degrading the circuit over time.
- Mixing power-limited fire alarm cable with other circuits in a way that risks its reliability.
In the field
I support fire alarm cable on its own, never leaning on the ductwork or another trade's hangers. During a real alarm those seconds of continued operation are the entire point of the system.
