The magic is in the power-limited supply. A listed Class 2 source caps the voltage and current so low that the circuit cannot start a fire or shock someone, which is why thermostat, doorbell, and control wiring can be so light.

The one thing people miss is separation: you cannot just mix Class 2 with power conductors in the same box, or the power circuit can energize your safe little control wires.

When it applies

Class 2 circuits are power-limited right at the source, so the supply itself caps the energy to a level that will not readily start a fire or shock someone. That is why thermostats, doorbells, and low-voltage controls use lighter wiring methods and relaxed separation rules compared with line-voltage circuits.

Common mistakes

In the field

When I run controls for HVAC or access systems I keep the Class 2 cabling away from the line-voltage side and use a listed power-limited source. Mixing them is where installers get into trouble.
