Optional standby covers the loads you would like to keep running — not life safety, just convenience. The critical rule is a transfer switch or interlock that makes it physically impossible to feed the generator and the utility at the same time.

The suicide-cord backfeed setup is the nightmare here. A proper interlocked transfer switch is cheap next to a lineman's life, and I never let a customer talk me out of one.

When it applies

This covers optional standby power — the backup generator a homeowner or business installs for convenience, not life safety. The critical piece is the transfer equipment, which must guarantee the generator and the utility are never connected at the same time.

Common mistakes

In the field

On a home standby install I always confirm the transfer mechanism physically cannot close both sources together, then I test it under load. Backfeeding the grid is the one mistake in this work that can quietly kill someone blocks away, so there is no room for a clever shortcut.
