Read the first page before you argue with an inspector. The Code tells you straight out that it is a minimum for safety, not a blueprint for a good job. Meet it and the building will be reasonably free of hazard; that is all it claims.
People quote 90.1 at me like it guarantees a tidy install. It does not. It keeps folks from getting killed. Everything above that line is on you and the engineer.
When it applies
Article 90 frames everything that follows. It tells you the Code is about safety, not building the most efficient or convenient system. Read it once and it changes how you interpret every rule after it.
Common mistakes
- Treating the NEC as a design guide. It sets the floor for safety, not the target for good engineering.
- Assuming a code-compliant install is automatically a good install. It can be legal and still be a headache to maintain.
- Ignoring that local amendments and the AHJ have the final say.
In the field
I have argued with more than one contractor who wanted to run wire the cheap way and pointed at the Code as their excuse. I remind them the book is the minimum you are allowed to do, not the most you should do. Meeting 90.1 keeps people alive. Doing the job right keeps the customer calling you back.
