Article 706 grew up alongside the home-battery boom. It requires disconnects that isolate the storage from everything it connects to, clearly marked, because a battery cannot be turned off — only cut off.

This is the frontier of the trade right now. Every wall-mounted battery I install, I map out exactly how a firefighter isolates it, then I label it so they do not have to guess.

When it applies

This governs energy storage systems, the battery packs behind solar and backup setups. Because a battery is always a live source, you cannot just open a breaker upstream and assume it is dead. The article requires clear disconnecting means so the stored energy can be isolated for service and for emergency responders.

Common mistakes

In the field

I treat every ESS as a source that never sleeps. Before I open a battery enclosure I follow the listed shutdown steps and verify zero energy at the terminals, because unlike a grid feed, there is no utility to call and have it turned off.
