Rapid shutdown drops the voltage inside and around the array to a safe level within seconds of hitting the switch, using module-level electronics or a similar system. The whole point is roof safety for firefighters.

This is my favorite kind of code: it came directly from responders telling us they would not put an axe through an energized roof. The technology grew up fast to meet it.

When it applies

Rapid shutdown applies to PV systems on or in buildings. When someone hits the shutdown, conductors leaving the array boundary have to drop to a safe voltage fast, and the conductors inside the array boundary have to come down too, so a firefighter on the roof is not staring at live DC that no breaker turns off.

Common mistakes

In the field

I always trip the rapid shutdown and meter the array afterward, not just trust the paperwork. Module-level electronics fail, and the only proof that matters to the crew on the roof is a meter reading near zero.
