Article 610 covers the electrical guts of overhead traveling cranes and hoists: the motors that lift and travel, the control circuits, and especially the contact conductors, the bare or enclosed runway rails that feed power to a machine as it rolls the length of a bay. Guarding those energized runway conductors and providing a disconnect that the crane operator and maintenance crews can rely on are central.

The runway conductors are what make cranes their own animal. They are energized rails people can reach from a platform, so I guard them, mark them, and make sure the disconnecting means truly isolates the crane for service. A crane down for repair with live runway rails overhead is an accident looking for a victim.

When it applies

Common mistakes

• Sizing conductors and controls off nameplate full-load without accounting for the intermittent, high-inrush crane duty cycle.
• Leaving runway contact conductors unguarded where people can reach them from a platform or ladder.
• Missing the required disconnecting means, both the runway disconnect and the one at the crane, so the machine cannot be locked out for service.

In the field

Before anyone climbs onto a crane for maintenance I confirm both disconnects, the one feeding the runway and the one on the machine, are present and lockable. Those runway conductors stay hot long after the crane parks, and a tech up on the bridge needs a positive way to kill them.
