Lugares Clase III — fibras y partículas inflamables
Class III is the least severe of the three because fibers like cotton lint and wood shavings tend to settle rather than hang in the air as an explosive cloud. The danger is more of a fire than a detonation, so the wiring rules are a step lighter than Class II but still demand enclosures that keep fibers out and surfaces cool.
I treat a textile mill with the same respect as any classified space. The lint gets everywhere, it wraps around motors, and a hot bearing in a lint nest is how these places burn. Enclose it, keep it clean, watch the heat.
When it applies
Class III locations handle easily ignitable fibers and flyings, think textile mills, cotton gins, and woodworking shops. The material is present and can settle on equipment, but it is not usually airborne in ignitable clouds the way Class II dust is.
Common mistakes
- Letting lint and sawdust build up on motors and enclosures until it insulates and ignites on a hot surface.
- Assuming Class III is trivial because it is the least severe classification and skipping dust-tight equipment.
- Using open motors where the accumulation of fibers demands totally enclosed or dust-ignitionproof types.
In the field
In a woodworking shop I found motor housings caked in fine dust sitting inches from the blades. The bearings ran hot and that blanket of flyings was a fuse. I specified enclosed motors and set a housekeeping schedule with the owner. Class III is not about explosive clouds; it is about the settled fiber layer finding a hot surface. Keep the equipment enclosed and the accumulation cleaned off.
