The idea is not to drain fault current to earth but to tie everything — rebar, ladders, pumps, the water itself — to the same potential. If it is all at one voltage, there is nothing to shock across.

People confuse bonding with grounding here. Bonding equalizes; grounding provides a fault path. The pool grid is about equalizing so a swimmer never becomes the conductor between two metal things.

When it applies

Equipotential bonding applies to the metal in and around a pool: the reinforcing steel or equivalent grid, the perimeter surface, metal fittings, pump motors, and more. You tie it all together so everything sits at the same potential and a swimmer never bridges a voltage difference.

Common mistakes

• Missing the perimeter bond, the grid extending out around the pool deck where people stand dripping wet.
• Forgetting to bond the pool pump motor or a metal ladder anchor.
• Treating the bond as a ground rod job. It is about equalizing potential, not draining to earth.

In the field

I helped bond a new backyard pool and made a point of connecting the deck reinforcing, the shell steel, the ladder cups, and the pump all into one grid before the concrete poured. The goal is simple to explain to homeowners: no matter what goes wrong upstream, there is no voltage difference between the water, the rail, and the wet deck for anyone to feel. Miss one piece and you leave a gap in the safety net.
