Article 626 is a modern, environmentally driven addition. It supports truck-stop electrification, where a driver plugs the cab into a pedestal to run climate control and appliances without idling the engine all night. The rules cover the site distribution, the individual parking-space receptacles, GFCI protection, and how the connection to the vehicle is made and disconnected.
I like that this article exists because the tech is genuinely useful, cleaner air and quieter lots. From the install side it is a lot of weatherproof pedestals taking abuse from big rigs, so I build the distribution tough, protect every receptacle, and place the pedestals where a swinging trailer will not clip them.
When it applies
Electrified truck parking gives long-haul drivers a way to plug in for cab heat, air conditioning, and appliances instead of idling a diesel all night. Article 626 covers the pedestals, receptacles, and site distribution that make that shore power possible at truck stops and rest areas, including the GFCI and rating requirements at each stand.
Common mistakes
- Sizing site distribution for a few trucks when a full lot draws far more at once.
- Skipping the required personnel protection at the parking-space supply equipment.
- Using receptacles not rated for the outdoor, high-cycle abuse of a truck stop.
In the field
On these installs I plan the distribution for a busy lot, not a quiet night, and I use rugged, weather-rated stands with proper ground-fault protection. Drivers rely on it to sleep without running the engine.
