Article 604 is what makes modern office ceilings fast to build. Instead of pulling and terminating every branch circuit in the field, you snap together factory-made cable assemblies with listed connectors above a lift-out ceiling. It is limited to accessible locations because you have to be able to reach and inspect those plug connections.
The system only stays safe if you use the manufacturer's matched parts and do not mix brands or bury the connectors. I keep the runs accessible, use the keyed connectors as intended, and resist the temptation to modify a listed assembly, because the whole benefit is that it stays a known, tested product.
When it applies
Article 604 covers manufactured wiring systems, the factory-built, plug-together components you snap in above accessible ceilings. Instead of field-wiring every run, you connect prewired assemblies with listed connectors, which speeds up open-office and tenant-improvement work.
Common mistakes
- Installing the system where the ceiling is not accessible. These assemblies have to stay reachable, not sealed behind hard lids.
- Mixing connectors or components from systems that were never listed to work together.
- Leaving the flexible whips unsupported so they sag and strain the plug connections.
In the field
On a fast-track office fit-out these systems saved us real labor. The prewired sections drop in and click together, and one crew can light a whole floor in a fraction of the time hard-piping would take. The catch is you only get that benefit where the ceiling stays accessible and you keep every connector within its own listed family. Mix brands or bury it and you have traded a code violation for a little speed.
