Article 547 is written for a brutal environment. Ammonia and moisture eat standard fittings, so it calls for corrosion-resistant equipment and gasketed, dust-tight enclosures. But the standout concept is equipotential planes: a bonded grid in the concrete of animal confinement areas so a cow standing on it does not feel a voltage difference between the floor and a metal waterer.

Stray voltage is a real production and welfare problem on farms, animals refuse to drink or milk when they feel a tingle. I install the equipotential bonding grid carefully and tie it to the system ground, because on a dairy the difference between a working parlor and a failing one can literally be a few millivolts under the herd.

When it applies

Article 547 addresses agricultural buildings, barns and livestock areas where dust, corrosive vapors from manure, moisture, and the animals themselves make for a brutal environment. Equipotential bonding in animal confinement areas is one of the headline requirements.

Common mistakes

In the field

In a dairy barn I helped install an equipotential plane in the milking area, bonding the rebar in the slab to the equipment grounds. Animals are sensitive to tiny voltage differences underfoot, enough to cut milk production or spook them. Tying the metal and the concrete to one potential removes the gradient they would otherwise feel. In ag buildings you also fight corrosion constantly, so I use fittings rated for the damp, chemical-laden air.
