Ventilation openings have to stay clear, and the required clearances around the unit are as much about airflow as about access. Then 450.3 sets the overcurrent protection based on primary and secondary voltages and currents.

People stack boxes against a dry-type transformer and choke it. It runs hot, the insulation ages fast, and the failure that follows is expensive and sometimes smoky.

When it applies

Transformers generate heat and must shed it, so ventilation openings stay clear and the unit gets the clearances its listing demands. Overcurrent protection is required on the primary, and depending on the configuration and voltage, on the secondary as well. Article 450 sets the sizing percentages for both.

Common mistakes

In the field

I keep the required air space around every unit and verify the primary and secondary devices match the calculation. A starved transformer cooks its own windings, and that failure is expensive and slow to diagnose.
