The directory has to describe the specific load, not say 'lights' for half the panel. 'Bedroom receptacles' tells the next person something; 'misc' tells them nothing.
I have been shocked once in my career, and it was because a previous guy labeled a live circuit 'spare.' I do not skip the directory anymore, and neither should you.
When it applies
Every panelboard needs a legible directory that tells you specifically what each breaker feeds. General labels like lights or plugs do not cut it anymore, the code wants the room or equipment named clearly enough that the next person can find the load without guessing.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the directory in pencil scrawl or blank, especially after a remodel moved circuits around.
- Vague entries like receptacles that describe a whole floor instead of a specific area.
- Not identifying spares and spaces, so nobody knows which slots are actually dead.
In the field
I fill out the directory as I terminate, not at the end of the day when I am tired and half the wires look alike. A clean, specific schedule is the cheapest safety upgrade in the whole panel, and it is the first thing a sharp inspector reads.
