Cables flexibles — usos permitidos y prohibidos
The rule is short and people still break it: no cords through holes in walls, ceilings, or floors, and no cords standing in for permanent wiring. If a cord is doing a receptacle's job, install a receptacle.
Every 'temporary' cord run through a wall becomes permanent the day it is hidden. That is when it stops being maintained and starts being a hazard.
When it applies
Flexible cords are meant for specific, often temporary jobs, connecting appliances that get moved, tools, or equipment that needs to be unplugged for service. They are a convenience, not a wiring system, so they cannot stand in for the fixed wiring a building is supposed to have.
Common mistakes
- Running a cord through a wall, ceiling, or doorway as if it were permanent wiring. That is one of the clearest violations there is.
- Chaining power strips or extension cords to reach a far outlet instead of adding a receptacle.
- Using a cord where it can be pinched by furniture or a door and slowly damaged.
In the field
When I walk a job and see a cord stapled along a baseboard feeding a room, I know someone skipped adding a real circuit. The right fix is almost always another receptacle, not a longer cord.
