A standard box is fine for a light, but a fan needs a box specifically listed for fan support, usually braced between joists and rated for the weight plus the wobble.

This is the single most common thing homeowners get wrong when they swap a light for a fan. The box has to say it is fan-rated, full stop.

When it applies

This one keeps ceiling fixtures and fans where they belong, on the ceiling. Any box supporting a luminaire has to be listed for that use, and a box holding a ceiling fan must be specifically listed and marked for fan support, rated for the weight and the constant vibration a spinning fan creates.

Common mistakes

In the field

When a homeowner wants a fan where a light used to be, I always replace the box with a listed fan-rated one on a brace between joists. It is a small part that prevents a fan crashing onto a bed.
