Each conductor size has a cubic-inch allowance (14 AWG = 2.00, 12 AWG = 2.25, 10 AWG = 2.50). Devices count as two of the largest conductor; all grounds together count as one. Try it in the Box Fill Calculator.
When it applies
Every time you land conductors, a device or a set of clamps inside a box, you owe it a quick volume check. It matters most in crowded switch boxes and old work retrofits where somebody wants to cram three-ways, dimmers and a stack of splices into a shallow box.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that a device like a receptacle or switch counts as two conductor volumes based on the largest wire on it.
- Leaving out the extra allowance for internal cable clamps or a mix of wire sizes.
- Counting all the equipment grounds as many when they only count once as a single conductor.
In the field
I keep the volume of my common boxes memorized, so on a remodel I can glance at a box and know whether the homeowner's dream of a triple dimmer will fit or whether I am cutting in a deeper one. Overstuffed boxes overheat and pinch insulation — give the wires room to breathe.
