Por qué existe este código

Los bomberos y socorristas deben poder apagar un edificio rápido, y tú también cuando algo sale mal.

The disconnect has to be readily accessible and grouped so nobody hunts for it in an emergency. Recent cycles pushed the service disconnect to the outside of dwellings so responders can pull power before they enter.

I have watched a fire crew stand in the yard because the only disconnect was inside a burning garage. That is exactly what this rule is trying to prevent.

When it applies

Every service on a building needs this — the single point where a person can walk up and cut all the ungrounded conductors feeding the premises. It has to be outside or immediately inside where the conductors enter, and it has to be reachable, not buried behind a stack of inventory in the back of a warehouse.

Common mistakes

In the field

First thing I tell any crew: if the fire department cannot find and throw that handle in seconds, it is in the wrong place. Label it, keep the space in front of it clear, and make it obvious.

Nota de campo
Coloco la desconexión exterior donde un bombero cansado a las 3 de la mañana pueda encontrarla sin linterna. Esa es toda la prueba que uso.
