Why this code exists

Every low-energy cable entering a building can carry lightning surge or contact a power line. Collecting the common protection rules in one place stops each comms article from repeating — and contradicting — itself.

Article 800 was reorganized in 2020 to become the general, umbrella article for all of Chapter 8's communications systems. Rather than each article (805, 820, 830, 840) restating the same fundamentals, the common material now lives here: bonding and grounding of cable shields and metallic members, primary protectors, cable listings and their fire ratings, installation and support, spacing from power conductors, and mandatory removal of abandoned cable.

Chapter 8 is special because it stands largely on its own — its systems are only subject to other chapters where those chapters are specifically referenced. Article 800 anchors that independence by defining the safety baseline every communications install must meet, especially the grounding and bonding that protects people and equipment from lightning and inadvertent contact with power. Learn 800 well and the individual system articles become mostly variations on a theme.

When it applies

Article 800 lays the shared foundation for the communications systems in Chapter 8, covering bonding and grounding at the entrance, the cable listings and their fire ratings, spacing from power conductors, and the requirement to remove abandoned cable. The specific articles for phone, network, and broadband all build on these common rules.

Common mistakes

In the field

On a data cabling job I pull the abandoned runs out as I go, use plenum-rated cable where the air handling demands it, and bond the entrance point properly. These general rules catch more inspection flags than people expect.

Field note
Since 2020, 800 is the first article I open on any comms job — bonding, grounding, cable listings, and abandoned-cable removal all live here now instead of being copy-pasted into every article. Get the grounding right at the point of entrance and half the Chapter 8 battle is already won. Lightning finds the shortcut you didn't bond.
